Thank You Control Design Readers

Readers Choice 2017.png

For the past 17 years, Control Design Magazine has published their Readers' Choice Awards. For the 2017 Awards, they sent out nearly 18,000 ballots to their subscribers who have buying authority or influence for industrial control or automation products.

“Our readers are the people who build the machines that are installed in factories and assembly plants,” said Mike Bacidore, editor in chief of Control Design Magazine.

The survey used an unaided ballot, meaning that they were not given a choice of vendors, but rather wrote in their top two recommendations amongst 65 product categories. Categories included Circuit Protection, embedded Computer Systems, Network Routers and Switches and e-CAD software.

Top 10 Engineering Shows of All Time.pngHere is a little bit of light-hearted fun for a Friday. How many people do you suppose became engineers because they were inspired by something they saw on television?

Quite a few, I imagine.

Here is a totally unscientific rundown of the top ten TV shows that inspire (or at least entertain) engineers, as voted for by me and also my editors. Some are fairly obvious, some are fairly obscure and most, if not all, are enjoyable, informative or even hilarious.

So settle down, fire up your YouTubes and let’s take a look at the Ten Most Awesome Engineering Shows of All Time Ever! See Top 10 Engineering TV Shows

EPLAN Coengineer.png

Launched at Hannover Fair 2017, Eplan Cogineer automatically generates schematics and fluid power systems to save perhaps weeks on large or complex projects

It’s no secret that machine and system designs are growing ever more complex. So the idea of being able to generate complete electro-technical documentation for a given design with just one click might sound pretty appealing.

What Can Augmented Reality Do for Manufacturing?

Augmented Reality in Manufacturing

One of the things that surprised me most about last year’s IMTS was the sheer number of virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) devices present in the exhibitor booths. The HTC Vive and Oculus Rift were frequent sights, but even more surprising was the appearance of Microsoft’s Hololens.

“Surely,” I thought, “this is just a marketing gimmick. Manufacturers aren’t seriously considering using AR on the factory floor already, are they?”

And even if AR is ready for manufacturing, are manufacturers ready for AR?

What can this technology hope to contribute beyond commercial and advertising applications?

As it turns out, the answer is “A lot.”
